Higher education
The Kopinor licence gives students and employees at universities and university colleges the right to make photocopies, printouts and digital copies of copyrighted works without having to obtain permission from each individual rightsholder.
The licence is based on an agreement between Kopinor and the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions.
What the licence covers
The licence allows students and employees to copy and use material from both Norwegian and foreign sources.
This includes photocopies, printouts and digital copies from:
- books
- journals
- magazines
- newspapers
- internet content
The author must be named, and the title and source of the work must be stated.
What the licence does not cover
The licence does not cover the copying of:
- audio and audiovisual works
- computer software
- games
- original works of visual art
- photographs
The licence covers internal use only. Digital copies may not be made available on open websites.
Use of material in AI tools
Material copied under this agreement may not be used as training data for machine learning or models for generative artificial intelligence.
Such use requires a more specified agreement or legal authorisation. This includes copying and use of protected material when training large language models and when using AI tools to generate new content, such as text, pictures, sound or video.
Extent of reproduction
For students and course participants, the licence allows copying of:
- books: up to 15 % of the total number of pages
- scientific journals: up to one article from one individual issue
There are no limitations on the extent of reproduction from other periodical publications such as newspapers, weekly periodicals and cultural and professional journals. The same applies to material published on open websites.
Book excerpts and Bolk
Curriculums and other necessary learning materials in the form of book excerpts can be made available to students and course participants in digital or printed form.
Book excerpts must be registered in Kopinor’s digital solution Bolk. Bolk can also be used for compiling and producing course packs and for rights clearance when the material is outside the licence limitations.
Copyright notice
When using Bolk, all material is automatically marked with a copyright notice. Institutions that create course material outside Bolk must be aware of the regulations for such notices. Kopinor may request that material is sent for control.
Extended rights clearance
If an excerpt exceeds 15 % of the total number of pages, permission must be obtained from the relevant rightsholders.
Bolk can be used for such clearance. Many rightsholders have already authorised extended use through the solution. Otherwise, a special request is sent to the rightsholder. The price for extended rights clearance is displayed when the order is submitted, and the institution will be invoiced separately.
