Bolk – digital course material

What is Bolk?

Bolk simplifies the production and distribution of course material based on book excerpts.

As long as an excerpt does not exceed 15 % of a book, all material registered in Bolk is automatically cleared for use. The content is delivered as ready-to-use PDF or EPUB3 files.

Through Bolk, universities and university colleges can:

• search for books and publications
• select and compile book excerpts
• create digital course material and course packs
• share material with students
• obtain the necessary rights clearance

Book excerpts must be registered in Bolk

Under the copying agreement between Kopinor and universities and university colleges, book excerpts used as required reading or other course material must be registered for rights clearance in Bolk.

This applies to book excerpts provided in both digital and printed form, including excerpts used in course packs.

When an excerpt exceeds 15 %

The Kopinor licence generally allows up to 15% of a book to be copied.

If a larger excerpt is needed, additional rights may be obtained through Bolk. Many rightsholders have already authorised extended use through the service. In other cases, a request is sent to the relevant rightsholder.

Any additional costs are displayed when the order is submitted.

One solution for course material

Bolk provides a complete solution for ordering, producing and distributing course material.

Through the service, universities and university colleges can:

• search for books and other publications
• select excerpts for use in course material
• combine material from different sources
• order additional rights when the required excerpt exceeds the limits of the Kopinor licence
• distribute course material digitally or order printed copies

Reporting and rights clearance are handled through the service.
